Mike Coles, K537 “Duffy Moon”
Mike Coles is a long-standing Javelin sailor closely associated with East Anglian Javelin activity and with Blakeney, most notably as helm of K537, “Duffy Moon”.
His sailing record in the Yearbooks begins with open meeting appearances in the mid 1980s, including a Stone SC open meeting listing him as M Coles sailing with J Coles at Buckenham. [Javelin Yearbook 1986]
By 1986, he is recorded in the National Championships full results list, with “Duffy Moon” appearing as the boat associated with M Coles and J Coles. [Javelin Yearbook 1987]
Alongside sailing, Mike contributed significantly to class administration. AGM minutes published in the Yearbooks show him serving as Treasurer, including a noted incident where trophies were lost from his car and he personally funded replacements, later reimbursed by the Association. He went on to serve as Chairman in 1991, as shown both in the committee listing and the published historical officers list.
As Chairman, Mike is recorded delivering the Chair’s report at the AGM held on 24 August 1991, thanking those supporting class promotion and noting activity around Sailboat ’91, including engagement with Dutch and German sailors and discussion on proposed development ideas. [Javelin Yearbook 1992]
On the water, the Yearbooks show Mike sailing with a range of crews over time. A 1992 season meeting report published in the 1993 Yearbook records Mike Coles and Matthew Botfield in boat 537, finishing joint 5th overall, with the narrative noting that they overtook the Houghtons during the final race. [Javelin Yearbook 1993]
Across the published record, Mike Coles therefore stands out as both a committed competitor, closely associated with K537 “Duffy Moon”, and a practical administrator who took on key Association responsibilities during a formative period for the class.
Thank you.
