Origins and early years The earliest yearbook references describe the Wilkinson Sword as a newly acquired National Championships trophy, originally awarded for a single designated race, commonly referred to as the Thursday race. By the early 1980s, this race was spoken of as being sailed “for the coveted Wilkinson Sword”, underlining the prestige that the trophy quickly gained within the class.
